08/06/2010 - Mandy Chowen of Clearwater offers a painting and description.

Harmless/Beneficial was inspired by the Asian lady beetle infestation experienced by North America.  This invasive species, with the inability to winter over out of doors, has decreased the pleasures of the fall on my rural property in central Minnesota.  These creatures get into the house after the soybean harvest and fill up my studio/shed with their bodies huddled together giving the building a distinct smell and then bite me when irritated.

Whether this invasion was intentional to control agricultural pests or accidentally transported here, every action we take as humans has a consequence.  In my recent works I have tried to depict a human engineered environmental future that may not be pleasant but attempts to insure our survival as a species.

It has now spread to approximately a hundred Minnesota bodies of water, including the Mississippi River and Lake Superior, as well as Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis.
